Back to School Success: Learning Strategies for Adult Learners
The journey of going back to school as an adult can be both exciting and daunting. Whether pursuing a degree to advance your career or fulfilling a personal academic goal, practicing skills that support your success is essential. Houston Back on Track, a job recovery initiative created by the Greater HoustonPartnership, is here to help Houstonians return to school. Through our community and education partners, we connect participants to educational programs, short-term certification programs, career coaching and more.
As you gear up to begin your journey back to school, here are five strategies that may help you along the way:
1. Create SMART goals
SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound goals that can help you measure your success. These goals help you map out your journey with clear, trackable and attainable benchmarks. Throughout your education, you can look to your SMART goals to track your progress and effectively assess your areas of improvement. Once you have these mastered, SMART goals can help you along in your career.
2. Join study groups
A network of people who can support and assist you will make a big difference while working through school. Connecting with students on similar paths can help you avoid procrastination, develop new study skills and enhance your personal and professional skills.
3. Use interactive study tools
Take advantage of digital platforms like quiz apps, online flashcards and educational podcasts to find new ways to study course materials. According to a study by the University of Texas at Austin, interactive learning modules increase student engagement by 45% compared to traditional learning methods. Learners are more motivated and retain more information through interactive methods!
4. Stay organized
Juggling school and work can be challenging, so organization is key to staying on top of deadlines.Allot time for study sessions, material review and class hours in your schedule. Whether you prefer to use a physical or digital planner, setting weekly or daily reminders is a way to keep those important dates in check.
5. Prioritize Self-Care
Don't neglect your well-being. Incorporate regular exercise, healthy meals, time with friends and family and relaxation techniques into your routine. Taking care of yourself enhances your focus, energy levels and overall performance in school!
